Historic Contexts and Archival Research

Historic contexts and archival research involve developing narratives and conducting in-depth research to uncover the historical significance of resources, providing a deeper understanding of their cultural and historical background. We research primary and secondary sources (e.g., deeds, maps, newspapers), analyze historical records, and integrate on-site observations to support NRHP evaluations, Section 106 reviews, and preservation planning for a variety of clients.

Clifton Historic Resources has completed multiple historic context projects, with archival research components integrated into nearly all NRHP nominations, DOE assessments, and Section 106 reviews.

Although every project requires archival research and a historic context, below are some examples of historic contexts that required extensive archival research and writing include:

  • Paul Laurence Dunbar Junior and Senior High School and Junior College (Additional Documentation), Pulaski County, Arkansas (2025) for the City of Little Rock

  • Tanyard Bayou Culvert, Memphis, Tennessee (2023) for Commonwealth Heritage Company and the City of Memphis

  • Historic Context for the Architectural/Historical Assessment for NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, Madison County, Alabama (2022) for Commonwealth Heritage Group and NASA
